A personalised book about a day with a favourite teacher

The person who greets your child every morning becomes one of the most important grown-ups in a small life. A good nursery or preschool teacher knows who likes their hat on crooked, which song comforts and how a squabble in the sandpit can end without anyone losing. When it is time to say thank you, at the end of the year, when your child moves up to school or at Christmas, a card or a bunch of flowers rarely says it all. A book in which your child and their teacher share an ordinary day says it instead: this is how it was with you, and this is what you meant to us. It can be read aloud at circle time and then stay on the classroom shelf, or go home with the teacher.

A book about a teacher often follows the day as it usually goes: the goodbye at the gate, circle time, playing outside, lunch, quiet time and, at last, home time. Something small goes wrong along the way, a glove goes missing, two friends fall out or a tower tumbles down, and the children sort it out with their teacher beside them. That is where the teacher shines, in what they always do: a song, a joke, a calm hand or a clever question that lets the children find the answer themselves.

What makes the book yours is the detail. Add the name of the nursery or the class, the songs you sing, the playground with its climbing frame and the thing the teacher always says. The more that matches, the more the children and the teacher will recognise.

You do not need a photo of the teacher. Describe them in words, their hair, their glasses, the green cardigan, and they are drawn from your description. If you would like to use a photo, ask the teacher first. Friends from the group can be in the book too, up to five characters in all, but only use a photo of someone else's child with their parents' permission. The rest of the group can still be part of the story without anyone being drawn from a photo.

The book works as well for a school teacher as for a nursery or preschool teacher, and for the grown-up who has looked after your child for one year or five. Write their name the way the children say it.

Your child is the hero, and the book can be a thank-you from your family. It can also come from the whole group: one parent makes the book, the others help with the foreword, a few lines on what the teacher has meant to them, and you share the cost.
