Why the theme Thanksgiving makes a good book
An adventure that suits the child
Thanksgiving is the one day of the year built around a table: the people a child loves in one room, a meal everyone helped to make and a moment to say out loud what you're thankful for. Children feel it before they understand it, in the smell from the oven, the extra chairs and the grown-ups laughing in the kitchen. A book about Thanksgiving puts your child at that table, with their own family, their own dishes and the cousin they only see once a year. It's a present to read on the day and again every autumn, and the grown-up reading aloud gets something too: this year's table, kept.
One table, many stories
The day gives a picture book a shape of its own: the morning in the kitchen, the guests arriving one by one, the parade on TV or a game in the garden, the long meal and the quiet after it. Your child can be the one who rescues the pie, finds the right chair for a great-grandparent, makes a name card for every place or helps a shy cousin feel at home.
The heart of the book is the moment at the table, when each person says what they're thankful for. Your child's own answer can be the last page.
Your family's Thanksgiving
Write in who comes, who cooks what and the traditions only your family has: the dish someone always brings, the walk after dinner, the soccer, the leaves raked into a pile to jump in. If you host friends, celebrate with two families or keep the day in your own way, the book can hold all of that, pets included.
In Canada Thanksgiving comes in October, at harvest time, with a long weekend of its own; the book keeps the day as your family keeps it.
Thankful at every age
For the youngest, a book of familiar faces, the smells of the kitchen and the words thank you is enough. Pre-schoolers love helping and the build-up to the meal, and school-age children can take in more: what it means to be grateful, and that some of the people at the table have come a long way to be there.
Read it on the day, or the evening before as everyone arrives, and bring it out again next year.
Your child is the hero
You fill in the child's name, age and what they like, and upload a photo. The story about Thanksgiving is written for your very own child, and the thirteen pictures and the cover are drawn from the photo in the style you choose. Brothers and sisters, parents, grandparents or the pet can come along, up to five characters. If you would like to include something that has happened lately, a trip or a lost tooth, just write it and it is woven in.

How the story could begin
The house has smelt of cinnamon since breakfast. You've been given the most important job of all: you're in charge of the pie crust, and there's flour on your nose to prove it. The doorbell rings, then rings again, and every time it does there are more coats on the bed and more voices in the hall. Grandma has brought her famous green beans. Your cousin has brought a jar with a lid and won't say what's inside. When everyone is finally squeezed around the table, Dad taps his glass. It's time to go round and say what you're thankful for. One by one, the answers come closer. Your heart is beating fast, because you've been saving yours all day, and it isn't something anyone will expect.
