Why the theme Our summer makes a good book
An adventure that suits the child
A summer is short, but it is what children remember longest: the jetty, the first stroke without armbands, the cousins and the evenings that never wanted to end. In a book about your summer your child is the hero, and everything you really did is kept: the places, the people who were there and the little things that made the summer yours. The book tells what happened, no made-up adventure, so the summer can be taken out again on a dark evening in November.
What goes in the book?
Write what you remember of the summer, in the order it happened if you like: where you were, who was there and what you did. It might be the seaside and the rock pools, a trip, the first day of the summer holidays or something your child learned. Put in the small things too, like what you had for breakfast outside or what you found on the beach. The book keeps to what you write and makes up nothing you weren't there for.
If something went wrong, rain that never stopped or a lost bucket and spade, it becomes the book's turning point, told with warmth and a little humour.
A summer to read about in winter
The book is drawn from your photos in the style you choose, so it is your child running out onto the jetty. The place is drawn as it looks, and the people who were there are in the pictures. It becomes a book to read aloud when summer feels a long way off, and a present for Grandma, Grandad or whoever was there.
It doesn't have to be a summer of long trips. For a child, summer can be a hammock, a bucket of crabs and an evening when the whole family sat outside until it got dark. Those are exactly the moments that look lovely in a book, because they are yours and nobody else's.
Your child is the hero
You fill in the child's name, age and what they like, and upload a photo. The story about your summer is written for your very own child, and the thirteen pictures and the cover are drawn from the photo in the style you choose. Brothers and sisters, parents, grandparents or the pet can come along, up to five characters. If you would like to include something that has happened lately, a trip or a lost tooth, just write it and it is woven in.

How the story could begin
Do you remember when summer began? Your shoes came off and stayed off all of July. Then came the days by the water, the ice cream that melted faster than you could eat it and the evening you were allowed to stay up late. Somewhere in the middle of it all happened the thing you still talk about. Now it is in a book, with you on every page.
