The Star That Could Not Sleep⭐

The book idea

A little star cannot fall asleep, and your child helps it find sleep again.

A calm bedtime story with soft pictures and a rhythm that makes it easy to fall asleep.

How the story could begin

All the stars were asleep except one. It blinked and blinked and could not stop. “I am not tired,” it whispered through your window. “Will you help me to become tired?”

A gentle journey through the night

A star twinkles at the window. It wants to sleep, but it can’t. The child follows it out into the quiet night, where everything moves a little more slowly. The moon sings a lullaby, a cloud offers to be a pillow and the wind whispers instead of blowing.

Each page grows a little calmer than the last. There’s no danger and no chase, just small encounters that each leave the star a little sleepier. Whether the star finally falls asleep, and which of the two drifts off first, you’ll discover when you read.

A bedtime story for different evenings

This idea makes a lovely last book of the evening, especially for children who find it hard to wind down or lie awake thinking long after the light goes out. The rhythm of the words naturally encourages your voice to grow softer and slower.

For the youngest children, aged 0–2, there can be just a few words on each page, with soothing repetition. A three-year-old can enjoy the moon and the cloud pillow. An eight-year-old may appreciate the gentle pace and little details in the pictures, and perhaps read aloud to a younger sibling in the next bed.

The bed, the window and the nightlight

Describe the bedroom as it really is: the window where the star knocks, the nightlight and the stuffed animal that always sleeps beside your child. If you have a special bedtime rhyme or a song you sing every night, that can be part of the story too. A sibling in the bunk bed can join the journey. You can also describe what you see through the window: a tree, a streetlight or a neighbour’s roof.

After reading, you could say goodnight to the things in the room one at a time, and breathe slowly in and out as you imagine a star twinkling. You can also tell your child that the stars are still in the sky during the day, even though the sun shines too brightly for us to see them. Find more peaceful stories under Bedtime stories.
