The snowflake who wanted to stay❄️

The book idea

The first snow has fallen, and one little snowflake doesn't want to melt when spring comes.

Your child follows the snowflake through winter and discovers how snow, ice and the seasons fit together.

How the story could begin

You woke up because it was so quiet. When you pulled back the curtain, everything was white: the grass, your bike, the roof of the neighbour's car. On the windowsill lay a single snowflake, sparkling more brightly than all the others. “Hello,” it said. “I've never been here before.”

A winter with a friend

The snowflake has fallen a long way from a cloud high above town, and now it wants to see everything. Together, your child and the snowflake go sledging, build a snow lantern and watch ice form on the pond. The snowflake explains how it was made from water and cold, and why snowflakes come in so many different shapes.

But as the days grow longer and the sun gets warmer, water begins to drip from the roof. The snowflake is afraid of disappearing, and your child must find a way to comfort it. The book reveals what happens to snow when it melts, and where the snowflake might be next winter.

Understanding the seasons

This idea is for children waiting for the first snow and those who wonder where it goes. It introduces the water cycle without feeling like a textbook: snow becomes water, water becomes clouds, and clouds bring snow again. Read it when snow falls, or when winter is giving way to spring.

A three-year-old might love the sledge, the snow lantern and the talking snowflake. A seven-year-old can follow water on its journey and wonder why the seasons come in the same order each year.

Your own winter

Tell us where you go sledging, who builds the biggest snowmen and whether there's a pond or lake near your home. You can include brothers, sisters, friends and even the dog who eats snow. If you live somewhere it rarely snows, the first snowfall might be extra special, and the book could be about the one day everything turned white.
