The lost polar bear cub🐻‍❄️

The book idea

A polar bear cub has been separated from its mother in a snowstorm at the North Pole.

Your child follows tracks across the ice beneath the northern lights, helping the cub find its way home before the ice breaks apart.

How the story could begin

The snowstorm had lasted all night, and when it finally stopped, everything was white and quiet. Then you heard it: a little whimper behind a snowdrift. There sat a polar bear cub, all alone, with snow on its nose. ‘Where’s your mum?’ you asked. The cub looked up at you and started to walk.

Across the ice

Armed with a compass and a flask, and holding the paw of a polar bear cub who won’t let go, your child sets out across the ice. Along the way they meet a walrus who has seen something, a group of Arctic foxes who know where the wind comes from and a polar researcher who has built an igloo at the end of the world. The northern lights glow green in the sky, showing them the way.

The ice creaks, and a floe drifts away with them on it. Your child must think quickly, dare to jump and trust that the cub knows more than it seems. The book reveals how they find their way home and who is waiting at the edge of the ice.

Cold, courage and friendship

This idea is for children who love animals, snow and wide-open spaces. It’s a story about caring for someone smaller than yourself and finding courage somewhere cold and unfamiliar.

A three-year-old might love the polar bear cub, the snow and the green lights in the sky. An eight-year-old can follow the compass and wonder how animals survive in such a cold place.

Make it your own

Tell us what your child wears in the snow, perhaps a striped hat or a favourite warm coat, and who they’d like to bring along on the ice. A brother or sister could carry the flask, and a dad who’s always cold could be the polar researcher. If your child has a polar bear soft toy, it could be the one who gets lost.
